Why Your Mood Affects Your Eating and How to Turn It Around

Jan 25, 2025

Let’s talk about something close to my heart—our relationship with food. Many of us struggle with this, especially when our moods take over. Have you ever found yourself reaching for comfort food when you’re stressed or sad? Or maybe when you’re in a good mood, you make healthier choices, but when things aren’t going so great, that nacho plate looks a little too tempting? You’re definitely not alone.

The connection between our mood and food choices is real, and I’ve seen it firsthand in the women I work with. Often, it’s rooted in negative thought patterns about our bodies. We get stuck in cycles of emotional eating, which can feel overwhelming. But the great news is, we can absolutely change this. Together, we can break free and build a healthier, more loving relationship with food.

Why Our Mood and Food Are So Connected

When we’re feeling stressed, anxious, or sad, food can become a coping mechanism. That comforting bowl of ice cream or bag of chips may feel like it’s helping in the moment. But understanding this connection is the first step in creating healthier habits. When we pause and begin to recognize these patterns, we open the door to real change.

Changing Negative Self-Talk Around Food and Body Image

Let’s talk about those negative thoughts we all have. You know the ones: “I’m not good enough,” “I’ll never lose this weight,” or “I hate my body.” These thoughts don’t define us—they’re just habits we’ve picked up along the way. It’s easy to let them take over, but the truth is, we have the power to change the narrative.

Instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” try telling yourself, “I’m strong, and I deserve to feel good in my body.” This shift won’t happen overnight, but with time and intention, you can start reframing those negative thoughts. When we stop punishing ourselves for food choices, we make peace with our bodies and learn to nourish ourselves without guilt.

Awareness: The Key to Understanding Eating Habits

How do we break the cycle? The first step is awareness. It’s not about obsessively tracking calories or counting bites. It’s about simply becoming aware of your eating habits. When do you eat? Why do you eat? What emotions drive those choices?

In my program, we start by focusing on these patterns. By checking in with ourselves, we start to build a healthier relationship with food. Are you eating out of stress? Loneliness? Anxiety? Once you identify these emotional triggers, you’re in a better place to make mindful, loving choices that serve both your body and mind.

Building a Healthier Relationship with Food

As we become more aware of how emotions influence our eating, we can start to shift our approach to food. Food can become something that nourishes our bodies, not something to cope with stress or negativity. We can eat to feel good, not just to fill up.

This is about enjoying food without fear, guilt, or shame. You have the power to create a peaceful, loving relationship with food, making choices that reflect self-care and love rather than punishment. You don’t need to be perfect—just real. Celebrate the small wins, whether it’s recognizing a trigger or choosing a nourishing snack instead of something that doesn’t make you feel good.

You Are Worthy of Feeling Good

Ultimately, it’s about making peace with yourself and your body. You deserve to nourish yourself in a way that feels good, both now and in the long term. You deserve to enjoy the food you love without guilt and to feel proud of your choices.

So, lovely soul, take a moment to check in with yourself. How are you really feeling? What are you truly hungry for? Maybe it’s not just food—it might be kindness, peace, or a little more self-compassion.

If you’re ready to take the next step in healing your relationship with food and embracing a healthier mindset, I’m here for you. Together, we can break free from negative patterns, transform how you think about food, and create lasting, positive change.

Sending you love on this beautiful journey! 💖

Warmly,

Lorri-Lynn
